In collaboration with the Gruner group we were able to show, what the Lego community had long suspected, that Ninjago Samukai indeed has no heart. This was an application of the Expand-Maximize-Compress (EMC) algorithm. The data comprised over one million frames, each a recording of X-ray photons transmitted through Ninjago by a very weak source. EMC was designed for applications where the object orientation, in each frame, is unknown and the signal is very weak. We were able to reconstruct Ninjago Samukai with as few as 100 photons per frame.
